Joshua Finkelstein conceived of this project to help restore the dignity of the Beth Jacob Cemetery, also known as the Doat Street Cemetery. The cemetery dates to the late 1800s.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo Cemetery Corporation administers and maintains several very old Jewish cemeteries in Western New York, including the Beth Jacob Cemetery.
Joshua Finkelstein is 15 and will enter the tenth grade at Nichols High School in the fall. He, and dozens of volunteers he organized, joined The Tree Doctor's two certified arborist professional climbers. The Tree Doctor's certified arborists pruned damaged trees, clearing the debris with help from Joshua and his volunteers. The Tree Doctor team, also operated a chipper and chip truck to remove debris.
The team worked on the cemetery site on Thursday, June 26, to Clear the land in advance of the volunteer work as part of its pro bono community services. The volunteers worked on the cemetery from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. last Sunday and will do so again on July 6.
In addition to the volunteer work, the Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo Cemetery Corporation hopes, through Joshua's leadership, to raise up to $200,000 that is needed to porperly complete the task of restoring dignity to the cemetery. The organization seeked philanthropists to provide these funds to complete work that the volunteers cannot, such as re-setting the cemetery monuments and reparing or replacing the fence.
